Day 8 and once again we've gone to the dogs!
Kabuki (or "Buki" as he is known in my family) is my mother's Japanese Chin. He is a small guy, lithe and long-haired, with a slim build underneath his luxurious tresses. My parents have been dog people as long as I can remember. Mostly boxers and larger dogs with a romping attitude and a big bark. Buki arrived about eight years ago along with a new boxer puppy (Alice). It wasn't long before Buki was in charge...and not just of the other dog, but of the people! Japanese Chins have this ability. Unlike most dogs, who are content to be one of the pack, Japanese Chins refuse to be in the pack at all. Why? Because they are truly CATS trapped inside a dog's body.
Not familiar with Chins? These dogs wash their faces with their paws (like cats), are aloof and undreadable at times (like cats) and are very selective about their food (can you say CAT CAT CAT?) even when offered a plate of human leftovers. You can call this dog and he will look at you and yawn....(cat cat cat cat) then turn his back to you. Even the opportunity to receive tummy rubs and scratches behind the ears do not tempt Buki.
Let me give you an example of Buki's exemplary people controlling skills. When Alice goes out to do her business (Buki prefers to go indoors in a designated area - can you say cat cat cat cat cat?) she knows to sit nicely for a treat when she comes back inside. Buki, noticing Alice is sitting in treat position, will come and stand next to her quietly. Alice receives her treat, and Buki will stare at you unrelentingly until you offer him a treat as well. Sometimes Alice doesn't even sit for her treat until Buki comes to stand next to her. What? Even Alice cannot resist Buki's thought control.
This breed is reported to have been developed solely as human companion animals. Hmmmmm. At least at my parents' home. the humans are definitely there solely to anticipate the whims of the Japanese Chin. So much worry about robots rising up and taking over the planet, and yet very few news headlines about these little dogs. I believe Buki is secretly plotting to take over the world. Don't say I didn't warn you.
