"Bear and Bull, Rising" is 12" x 6", oil pastel on board. Much of my work is influenced by archeological finds and ancient markings. For day one, I went back to the beginning of man's artistic efforts - cave paintings. This piece is inspired by a thousands of years old cave painting in which a ghostly bear and bull-like creature appear to rise up on two legs and loom over the landscape. The eerie and powerful emotion these ancient people conveyed through their art really struck me. Even with rudimentary tools, man has been moved to convey emotion and document experiences through art since the beginning of time.
Looking at my studio filled with paint, brushes, paper, boards, stencils, stamps, carving tools and whatnots, I realized sometimes using less is more. For this piece, I used my hands and fingers as tools, and oil pastel crayons as my paint. It was strangely freeing and satisfying.
